About Us

Remember back in 1978... when Kamloops thought the Milobars were crazy to build The Place Inn Hotel OUTSIDE of town? Well, looking at the area now, they were definitely on to something, even back then!

The nightclub was named "Coppers" and hosted live bands on many a weekend...

Peter started working at the hotel at the age of 9 - sweeping the parking lot, and rolling out the red carpet for bus tours while wearing a bow tie and vest.  As Peter grew older he worked in the dining room, at banquets, the front desk, and night audit when he wasn't playing hockey for Penticton or Nanaimo, while attending business classes in college.

Once Peter reached legal age, he started bartending and then managing Uncle Charlie's Bar & Grill, which was also owned by the family. By the time Peter had married Lianne and they had started their family, "Uncle Chuck's" sold and became The Maxx.

Peter returned to The Place Inn to Manage the hotel and pub, which was now know as "Loonie's". Many a great Oronge Night happened here, and longtime friends and memories were made.

In 2002, Peter added the new hat of city councillor, following in his father's footsteps. In 2003, renovations created "Loonie's Liquor Store", which developed a loyal following from their great wine selection and fabulous staff!

In 2005, Peter was re-elected to city council, and upon completing that term, was elected Mayor in 2008. Half-way through 2009, the property of The Place Inn was shut down for redevelopment.

In the spring of 2011, Lianne completed her Wine Fundamentals 1 certification from the International Sommelier Guild at Mission Hill Estate Winery w/ Head Sommelier Jesse Harnden, while waiting for construction to start. Once the building shell was ready, the award winning team at DW Builders helped create the 4800 sq. ft. that is Stag's Head Liquor Store, and the doors opened in July of 2011!

In early fall, Lianne and Stag's Head Liquor Store manager, Lee Keim, completed their Wine Spirit Education Trust Level 1 Foundation through James Cluer's Fine Vintage Ltd., at the BC Wine Information Centre in Penticton w/ consulting winemaker, Michael Bartier.

In November, Peter was re-elected as Mayor of Kamloops and times were busy as Lianne also started her Wine Fundamentals 2 certification from the ISG, with a completion date of March 26th, 2012. This class was held once again at Mission Hill Estate Winery, this time w/ Ingo Grady, Director of Sales (Canada) for Mission Hill Family Estate.

People have asked why not just keep the name "Loonie's"?  That name was born to a time that you paid a loonie for draft in a pub.  You sure as hell can't buy a pint for that now, and hence the name change!

Stag's Head is a nod to the Scottish heritage in Peter and Lianne's families of Craig and Henderson.
